Phytate - Necessary solutions & equipment

Thorough organization of the workshop before treatment is necessary to guarantee an optimal result. The following treatment solutions, materials and equipment should be at hand:

Necessary solutions

  • Ethanol (or Isopropanol)
  • Water (either re-calcified demineralised water, or tap water of good quality)
  • Calcium-phytate solution (freshly prepared)
  • Calcium-bicarbonate solution (saturated)
  • Gelatine-solution (freshly prepared)

Necessary materials & equipment

  • rigid support (i.e. Plexiglas-plate) that fits into the trays
  • polyester or polypropylene spunbond fabric (e.g. Hollytex® )
  • double sided self adhesive tape
  • small stainless steel scissors
  • stainless steel tweezers
  • sprayer (with Ethanol or ethanol water, gelatine)
  • several trays for immersion
  • Bathophenanthroline-indicator paper for iron-(II)-ions
  • pH indicator paper
  • filter paper circles or blotting paper
  • paper for mending (Gossamer tissue®, japanese paper, ca. 2g/m2)
  • spatula, scalpel
  • light table
  • (woolen) felts for drying
  • Blotting paper
  • Boards for drying
  • Weights for drying
